NEBULA RANGERS
by Rojan Chinta
"Nestled deep in the Canadian Shield is Nebula Command, the Nebula
Rangers base. Nearby is a finishing school where princesses come from
all over the galaxy..."
If that isn't the kind of series premise that'd sell a corporate TV
boardroom in Canada, what is? Brought to you by the crew over at
Toronto-based Mind Control Studios (the folks who brought you the
Kungol Nate art heist of 1999), the pilot for Canadian Nebula Rangers
is currently running on the Space channel. Written and directed by
Matthew Bennett, the pilot tracks young Nebula pilot Benma Mamon
(played by Bennett) as he's partnered up with crusty old veteran Davis
Laramie (played by Shane Laurila) to, well, save the galaxy and,
hopefully, some fine young princesses in the process.
Shot guerilla style on a Sony DV cam with after-effects and backgrounds
composed on a Mac G3, Canadian Nebula Rangers was a one-year,
two-hundred dollar project. Sure, it's rough, it's camp, and it's a
piss take on the spaceships and princesses fantasies that every young
Star Wars fan is well familiar with. But if you're craving some
undaground sci-fi or jonesing for the Johnbronski cameo, episode one is
all there is until financing for the next stage kicks in.
So join Canada's Elite Mounted Space Troops. For the full pilot, a
trailer, outtakes, file sharing, a special effects tutorial, and lots
of Nebula info check out www.canadiannebularangers.com. And make sure
you apply for your own Nebula Class pilot's license.
