Best Of Toronto - Art

Best art party: Mind Control
There are so many art parties, but none so reliably good as the ones at Mind Control . Early on, it inherited the vibe of the Atlantis that was Art System, rendering partying as art, a heightened, aesthetic form of debauchery. Curator Derek Mainella and directors Shane Laurila and Matthew Bennett have closed the Gladstone Street space and will soon be mounting shows in other galleries. Keep an eye out for Efficiency 3 , coming soon.

The Efficiency Show
(Mind Control Studios)

Imagine SCTV twenty years later with a dash of the post-modern, a hint of the
post-structuralist, and a Count Floyd budget. This series of pilot episodes for a
show too left-field for mainstream comedy channels but necessary for
insomniac couch potatoes is unbounded, underground genius at its finest. Extreme
ping pong is yours to discover.

Music Vibes

Hiphouse pioneer Fast Eddie is glad he stubbornly refused to change his sound.

FAST EDDIE CASHES IN ON 80S NOSTALGIA HIPHOUSE V.2

BY BENJAMIN BOLES

FAST EDDIE with DJ JES , DMT and BUTROS BUTROS GALI at Studio 99 (99 Sudbury), Friday (August 6). $10. www. mindcontrol. ca. As the underground in the 90s drew inspiration from the 70s, the 00s have similarly been focused on mining the 80s for new-old ideas to rehabilitate. So far we've seen electro, new wave, Italo-disco, industrial, no-wave, punk-funk and acid house getting a second chance in trendy circles, and it's looking like hiphouse might be next. Just over a month ago, Mind Control Gallery brought Chicago hiphouse pioneer Tyree Cooper to town, and – necrophilic nostalgia aside – the party was a brilliant, sweaty mess and shitloads of fun. This week they're bringing in Cooper's pioneering peer Fast Eddie for their party at Studio 99.

BLENDER

Featuring DJs DMT, Claudia McKoy, Curtis Smith, A Man Called Warwick. Fri, Nov 28. 7pm. Mind Control, 42 Gladstone, unit 5. Free.

BY DENISE BENSON

The galleries are alive with the sound of music. Club nights are alight with art. Hopeful exaggerations perhaps, but it's clear that music and visual arts are being merged with increasing creativity and zest in Toronto and beyond.

NEBULA RANGERS

by Rojan Chinta

"Nestled deep in the Canadian Shield is Nebula Command, the Nebula Rangers base. Nearby is a finishing school where princesses come from all over the galaxy..."
If that isn't the kind of series premise that'd sell a corporate TV boardroom in Canada, what is? Brought to you by the crew over at Toronto-based Mind Control Studios (the folks who brought you the Kungol Nate art heist of 1999), the pilot for Canadian Nebula Rangers is currently running on the Space channel. Written and directed by Matthew Bennett, the pilot tracks young Nebula pilot Benma Mamon (played by Bennett) as he's partnered up with crusty old veteran Davis Laramie (played by Shane Laurila) to, well, save the galaxy and, hopefully, some fine young princesses in the process.
